What's the best time of year to visit Lanzarote? Good question. And we think you'll like the answer. Lanzarote is a great all year round holiday destination!
The best time to visit Lanzarote?
Thanks to its location, some 2,000 miles north of the equator and 70 miles off the west coast of Africa, it enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Not only that but temperatures rarely drop below 18 degrees even in the winter, so it's still perfect weather for sunbathing or taking a dip in the ocean!
Of course, if you want to get into specifics there are many different times of the year that could be better for different types of holiday-makers. Maybe you want to avoid the school holidays, or perhaps the scorching summers are a little too much and you just want a week of bearable sunshine during the cold winter months of Northern Europe.
Lanzarote Holidays in the Summer
As you might expect, summers in Lanzarote are hot, hot, hot. This can sometimes make it a little unbearable and you'll be constantly seeking shade. A day on the beach might be reduced to a few hours, following by looking for things to do in Lanzarote in the afternoons. For some this is a perfect vacation, but for others, prepares the more mature travellers amongst you, summer might not be the best time to visit the island for a holiday.
It's true that that the summer months are often the busiest as it's the time that families are able to bring their kids on holiday. So if that doesn't sound too appealing to you then maybe it's better to come at a different time of year, like when the schools re-open. There are also a number of adult only hotels to chose from, or you can stay in the privacy of your own private villa.
Lanzarote Holidays in the Autumn
During the Autumn months the temperature drops slightly, so the heat from the sun and the UV levels are less intense. It's still very warm though, and the welcome Lanzarote breeze helps to keep the air moving. Autumn is one of my favourite times in Lanzarote. Whilst it can be a little quieter in comparison to the height of Summer it's still busy enough to keep a great atmosphere and vibe throughout the island.
Lanzarote Holidays in the Winter
Lanzarote is the perfect place to escape the cold, wet, dark conditions of Northern Europe. Day time temperatures average out around 18 - 21 degrees and everything remains open, as though it were summer. Christmas is a great time to spend in Lanzarote. Whilst the locals don't really celebrate on the 25th (the Spanish celebrate Three Kings on the 6th January), you're sure to find restaurants and bars that are getting in to the Christmas spirit. Make sure you book your Christmas lunch way in advance (top tip - many are already full at the time of writing this blog and it's only August)
Lanzarote Holidays in the Spring
So you might have gathered from the comments regarding Winter holidays in Lanzarote above, that we don't have a winter in the traditional sense of ice, frost, snow, sleet and rain. It remains relatively hot and sunny all year round. So although Spring is quite different here to what you might expect at home, there is still a sense of freshness about it. February historically can be slightly cooler and wetter, but that doesn't mean you won't get a week or two of glorious sunbathing weather. You can also expect the island to make a bit of a transformation from the dry, orange dusty landscape as rains encourage the growth of flowers and greenery on the mountains and volcano slopes. It's a great time to get out and about and explore the island.
Do trips, excursions and activities in Lanzarote run all year round?
They do! Just as the sun shines pretty much all year, the excursions, trips and activities operate pretty much 365 days a year. One thing for sure is you will never struggle to find things to do in Lanzarote as there is always so much going on to keep holiday-makers engaged and happy.
Excursions such as The Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote Submarine and even Lanzarote Catamaran Cruises operate all year round, so don't worry about visiting the island in what you think might be a quieter time.
What about bars and restaurants? Are they always open?
Generally the bars and restaurants are open all year round, although some of the smaller family run businesses may take a small holiday here and there, and with how hard they work you certainly can't begrudge them of that!
